A system of unarmed combat,
Muay Thai (or Thai Boxing) originated in what is
now known as Thailand. As its exact beginnings are obscured
in legend, it is unclear as to how long Muay Thai has actually
been in existence. Early records indicate that Buddhist monks
prepared students to become bodyguards for the royal family.
Frequently, fights between camps were staged for the royal
court to determine selection into the guard. At that time
fights could often be quite brutal, sometimes resulting
in death.
Muay Thai has since evolved over the centuries. Fighters
now don protective equipment including boxing gloves, mouth
guard and groin protection (amateur fighters wear more protective
equipment). At the same time rough and sensational,
Muay Thai continues to be the national sport of Thailand.
Over the last few years it has seen a surge of international
popularity with practitioners in countries such as in
England, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Australia, Brazil,
the United States, and Canada.
Muay Thai differs from other Martial Arts in several
respects. One of the primary differences is that kicks and
punches are delivered with
full power and without holding back.
Patterns, or "Katas,” do not exist in Thai Boxing.
Instead focus, power, timing, and reflexes are developed through
various methods including shadow boxing, hitting the heavy
bags and “Thai pads,” and constant sparring practice.
Muay Thai is essentially a pugilist (boxing) system, which
employs basic, yet powerful, punches, elbow strikes, knees
and kicks. Throughout the Martial Arts World, Muay Thai is
highly revered, in part due to things such as the
devastating effect of the techniques that are commonplace
in the arsenal of a Muay Thai Boxer. This translates as an
almost unstoppable force in the ring or on
the street.
Muay Thai is a traditional martial art with an ancient history.
It was renowned in ancient times for its use by the Thai warriors
in their efforts for the independence of Thailand. The art
has been passed from generation to generation and is considered
a vital part of Thai heritage. Muay Thai continues to emphasize
a calm mind, strong self-discipline, gentleness, and gratitude;
in short, an elevation of the character of the practitioner.

Along with being called
the “most brutal of the Martial Arts,”
Muay Thai is also known as being among the most disciplined
and traditional of the arts. Part of that tradition, and
the honour that comes with it, can be seen in
the pre-fight ceremony performed by Thai boxers upon entering
the ring. Traditionally, Thai boxers enter the ring by
going over the top rope. The reason for this is closely
linked with Thai culture; a person's head is viewed as
the most sacred part of the body. Through the
practice of entering over the top rope, a fighter avoids
having anything pass over his or her head. |
From there, both boxers
place a hand on the top rope and proceed to circle the ring.
This action is known as "sealing the ring".
This lets your opponent know that it is now just between the
two of you; there is no one else present.
Next, in the center of the ring, the boxer bows three times.
This is called the Wai Kru.
The first bow is to honour the fighter’s coach, school,
fellow practitioners, and Muay Thai, in general. The second
bow pays homage to the fighter’s family and ancestors.
The final bow honors the boxer’s religious or spiritual
background.
Finally, the fighter performs a dance-like ritual during which
he/she goes through a number of symbolic motions known as
the Ram Muay.
Each school, or camp, developed its own unique Ram Muay.
The dance identified to which camp a fighter belonged. The
movements of the dance mimic many of the techniques that will
be used in the fight, and are also a means of warming-up the
body. During this time, boxers are able to centre themselves
so that they can focus on the task before them. A Thai boxer’s
balance, coordination, agility, strength, and confidence can
all be seen during the performance of the Ram Muay, and can
oftentimes act as a predictor of the fight
to come.
The tradition of the Wai Kru and Ram Muay continue to this
day, especially for those trained in and fighting with authentic
Muay Thai.
